Philadelphia was founded in 1682 by Englishman William Penn. It is the 6th largest city in the country.

The Native Americans who inhabited the area of Philadelphia before European occupation were the Lenape.

Swedish settlers arrived in the area in the 1600s and deserve the credit for their part in helping to colonize it. The City was important in the struggle on the slavery freedom movement through the Underground Railroad.

Philadelphia quickly became the financial center of the Colonies, becoming the Capital of the Country in 1790 through 1800.

Philadelphia is the home of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776 and it was home to many historic heroes of the country, such as William Penn, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Betty Ross and Paul Revere just to name a few.
