Washington D.C. was founded in 1790 by George Washington/ U.S. Congress and the U.S. Constitution.

It is the 20th largest city in the country. Native Americans native to the area of D.C. were the Algonquian.

The United States Capital was originally located in Philadelphia however, James Madison argued that the National Capital needed to be apart from the states thus providing for the creation of a new area called District of Columbia.

Proposals were offered to locate the new district on lands of Maryland, New York, Virginia and New Jersey.

President George Washington included the town of Alexandria Virginia within the Federal District.

In 1791 President Washington appointed Frenchman Pierre Charles L’Enfant to devise a plan for the new city. An African American Scientist Benjamin Banneker was instrumental in the completion of The Federal District of Columbia.
